I’m Ashlyn Currie and I’m a voice actress. Well, I’m trying to be a voice actress. I’ve just started down this road in January of 2018. I began by reading a fanfiction called Le Cafe Rouge and ended up really enjoying it. So, in true Gemini fashion, I got a little distracted from that project to figure out how to be a professional Audiobook narrator.
I set out to my favorite platform for just about anything, Youtube, to learn how to kickstart my career. That brought me to the Booth Junkie. Learning the differences between microphone quality in comparison to their prices amongst his other videos on how to sound treatment works. He helped me quite a lot about figuring out what my booth set up will be in the future. That led me down a rabbit hole of other helpful voice artists’ and coach’s channels so I can soak up all they had to offer.
Right now I got lucky and I basically got a free Samson G-Track Pro USB mic. Yes, I know what you’re going to say. “That’s not a professional microphone!” “How dare you try to call yourself a professional with a USB mic!” To that I say, I’m broke and can’t afford the set up I want. As soon as I can you bet I’m getting an Audio Technica and a Scarlett 2i2 interface. But for now, I’ve sound treated my closet with a really rinky-dink fiberglass-type material RV cot mattress, and my USB mic. All of my samples have been recorded on that mic. I feel like as long as I can get a clean recording, I can make it work. I feel like struggling now, and working with cheaper materials will help me learn how to perfect how to properly talk into a mic or sound treatment. No amount of money will make me better, a great mic will not stop plosives the way properly addressing the mic will.
Money is also the reason I’ve never taken proper voice acting lessons. So I went to Youtube, yet again, and found a very helpful voice acting veteran. Mona Marshall has some really helpful lessons on her Youtube channel. I want to be able to get some proper lessons someday, but I also want to learn a lot on my own. I want to be able to afford the perfect teacher or mentor because I’m very passionate about this. Not just anyone will do. I’ve had to settle with a lot of things in my life, and I won’t do it with my career.
I’m not just about that voice over life. I do have hobbies and interests besides that. I’ve currently initiated learning more about Paganism and Wicca, and that’s bee rather enlightening for me. I have a cat named Kerfuffle. Rightly so because he tares around the house like his butt is on fire every night. I love anime, I’ve been watching anime since I was in 4th or 5th grade. I love rock and metal, I’m pretty sure Linkin Park is my favorite band (RIP Chester). I was too young to be able to appreciate HotTopic at the height of its prime, but boy I wish I had been able to have a pair of Tripp pants with a rainbow studded belt.
I’m a weird bundle of person, and I’m sure you’ll learn more about me if you follow my Youtube channel.
Till next time,
